Bideford 500 is again delivering a Heritage Day for Bideford on Saturday June 30th from 10am – 5pm, plus an evening concert. It will take place in and around the town centre streets, including Mill St, Cooper St, The Quay and Jubilee Square.
This day recognises and celebrates the amazing development of the port and town in the 1500’s and 1600’s when mariners and adventurers set off to explore and colonise land for Elizabeth 1st. Elizabethan Bideford also saw huge trade in tobacco and pottery which brought great wealth to the town.

Details for the programme for the day will be posted as soon as they are finalised so do check back and look for updates.

Procession and Cannon fire- there will again be a gathering on the Quay for the big procession, with Cannon firing and Sir Richard Grenville making an appearance. We hope that lots of people come dressed up and ready to join in the parade and enjoy some Morris dancing beforehand.

Performers, music and art - a variety of musicians will be performing themed music throughout the day; pupils from local schools will also perform music, dance and drama and there will be an exhibition of artwork from local schools.

Guided walks - In the afternoon, between 1 and 4.30 you can go on a guided Heritage trail walk, led by our wonderful volunteers, starting at the Burton Art Gallery and Museum.

The evening will bring a concert of music at Bideford Baptist Church Hall at 7.30.

Elizabethan Life - throughout the day there will be demonstrations of Elizabethan life, with Elizabethan townsfolk and special trades to find out about, ask questions about and even have a go at.

Bideford 500 are working with traders in the town to get involved – offer special menus, put on special events and generally get into the spirit of the day. Blazeys of Bideford have already confirmed that they are going to repeat their wonderful hog roast that they served up in 2011!

Before June 30th - in the run up to the day, members of the Committee, the working group and our volunteers will be promoting the day at various Bideford events – look out for us on the First Fridays of May and June on Mill St; Andy Powell is giving a talk about Sir Richard Grenville at the Friends of the Burton on May 23rd; we will also be out and about flyering in May and June in the town and up at Atlantic Village.
